Our foster and adoption program is at the core of what we do. We pull great dogs from the shelter system and match them with foster homes and ultimately, to loving and responsible forever homes. As a responsible rescue, we take steps to ensure that dogs and applicants are screened thoroughly to set both up for success. Since our inception in 2003, we have matched over 500 breed ambassadors to wonderful homes.

Ready for a new family member?

  1. Complete our adoption application. This allows us to find out a little more about you and determine which dog will be a match. If you are interested in a specific dog on our Adoptables page, please indicate this on the application.

  2. Phone interview. One of our Foster & Adoption Coordinators will schedule a mutually convenient time to chat on the phone about your application. You can discuss your needs and lifestyle, and which foster dogs might be a match for you.

  3. Home check. This is part of our screening process and an opportunity to discuss how to integrate a dog into your home.

  4.  Arrange a meet and greet with the dog(s) determined to be a suitable match. You are encouraged to bring family members and current pets to see if there is chemistry.

  5. Cooling-off period and de-briefing with your HugABull rep. Adoption is a lifetime commitment, and we discourage impulse adoptions. We ask that you take at least 24 hours to discuss the adoption with your family.

  6. Two week ‘foster-to-adopt’ trial period. Your adoption rep will coach you through the process of integrating the dog into your home, and will be available to answer any questions.

  7. If the dog is a fit, the adoption contract is signed and it's official! All dogs are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped or tattooed, and vetted prior to adoption. If there are any medical or training needs identified during the foster or foster-to-adopt period, HugABull will provide support and a transition plan for the adoptive family. HugABull is also a resource for the lifetime of the dog, and you can contact us at any point for support.

Fostering is an important component of responsible rescue. HugABull dogs are in foster care for a minimum of 30 days. During this time, foster parents will observe and provide feedback on behaviour, personality, likes, dislikes and anything else a potential adopter may need to consider.

There is no cost to becoming a foster home. HugABull provides food, supplies, veterinary care, and training for the dog in your care. We ask that you follow guidelines for safety and well-being of the dog, and partner with us to help the dog become as adoptable as possible.

There are many advantages to fostering! You can literally save a life and have the pleasure of a fantastic canine companion without the lifetime commitment.

As with our adoption process (see above) we do require an interview and homecheck for all potential fosters. This is for the safety of the dog, but also to to ensure that the dog is the best match possible for your lifestyle.

Interested? Complete our foster application.

Our foster-to-adopt program is the best of both worlds! If there isn't a current dog in our program that is a match for you, you can opt to foster a dog entering our program. We will provide all support offered to our foster homes for the first 30 days; if after that time you determine that the dog is a fit you can proceed with adoption. If not, no hard feelings! You have still done the dog a big favour and helped him on his way to a forever home.
