There are many ways you can help out!
SUPPLIES:
HugABull can always use donations of the following items:
Quality Dog Food for all age dogs
Dog Beds
Dog Dishes
Blankets
Towels
Toys - Pit Bulls need durable toys such as Kong or Nylabone
Collars & Leashes ("outgrown" equipment welcome :)
X-Pens or Baby Gates
Dog Treats
Haltis, Gentle Leaders, or other training devices
Grooming Supplies (brushes, shampoo, nail clippers)
Cleaning Products (Stain remover - Nature's Miracle)
FOSTER HOMES:
We are in need of responsible foster homes. Pit bulls often don't do well
in shelters, and providing a foster home to a pit bull in need can literally
save that dog's life. Home
fostering a pit bull is the number ONE reason why our pit bulls are adopted
so quickly! Being able to provide invaluable information such as what
the dog will be like in a home environment enables these otherwise potentially
"unadoptable" dogs to get top notch homes. People feel much more comfortable
adopting a home fostered dog, then strolling the lines of steel kennels,
blind picking a dog. Often times, a pit bull in a shelter would never
even warrant a second glance. We have taken pit bulls into our program,
that have sat at shelters for months, provided some additional information
about their personalities and provided some good photos and voila - a
forever home is found! If you are unable to foster, there are many other
ways to help!
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
We always need help transporting dogs, doing home checks, and keeping
track of pit bulls who come into local shelters. As we recommend trainers
and other services to shelters and new owners, we always appreciate feedback
on experiences with various dog related services. HugABull also needs
people who are interesting in opposing breed specific legislation. We're
always looking for people who have good knowledge about the breed and
a well-behaved dog, preferably titled (Canine Good Citizen) to do breed
education in schools and at community events. Also remember, your local
Animal Shelter or SPCA is always in need of volunteers to kiss, cuddle,
play with, and walk their pit bulls. Pit bulls usually take awhile to
get adopted, and they would appreciate the TLC we're sure!!
MONETARY DONATIONS (for those pressed for time!):
We usually have only a few dogs at a time within our direct foster care,
however a good portion of our dogs require all the basics - vaccinations,
spay/neuter, good quality food - just to get them back into tip top shape!!
We concentrate a fair portion of our efforts towards advocacy and education:
providing literature to shelters, support services to new bully owners,
attending public events, consulting on temperament assessments and the
list goes on and on! If you would like to make a donation, but are unsure
where your contribution would be best used, we would be pleased to advise
you of specific dogs who would greatly benefit from your support. The
needs include helping with the costs of everything from spaying, neutering
and other medical care of a specific dog, to obedience lessons or a trip
to the groomer.
PARTING THOUGHTS...
Without donations and community support, HugABull would not be able to
continue saving pit bulls and continue educating the public on the true
nature of these lovely dogs. Perhaps the greatest way you can help is
by owning and loving this breed responsibly. Make sure your dog is a breed
ambassador - that means obedient, well trained, well socialized, and well
loved. Have him or her be part of the family, and help change people's
minds about Pit Bulls!
